I watched 10 minutes of the MTV music awards... my generation sucks when it comes to music. I'm pretty sure nobody in pop music actually knows how to sing without using autotune or sounding like a boy band. Also, when did a Macbook become a band's primary instrument? (this post may be in bold font... I don't know why)

Here you go, a newer band that doesn't rely on videos, macbooks or autotune. Plus this song would sound great in a Trans-am.

I like some of the newer alternative rock that's been coming out. That's about the only new music I like.

This plus Mastodon, High On Fire and Baroness make kickass driving music.

Whenever people complain about new music being shit, I just like to point out that they're not looking in the right places. The radio has always been shit. The summer of love, 1969: guess what the top single was for that year? It wasn't the Stones, or the Beatles, or CCR. No, it was the Archies, with "Sugar Sugar", which is arguably a pretty awful song. Another point about the radio and rankings being wrong: Nickelback is on the CBC's list for being one of the top 100 Canadian albums.

My point is: awards, rankings, et cetera, will always be subjective to a standard that people like you and me don't like. So balls to them. Find something that you dig, then go off from there: find associated acts, past bands that members had been in, collaborations, whatever. There is plenty of new music you'll like. You just need to dig for it.

That is why most of my music library was released between 1978 and 1999 (with a few exceptions granted for what I consider to be exceptional modern metal albums)

I need a genuine applause GIF for this. You nailed it right on the head. If you're looking for great music, don't look at the obvious, dig that hole, forget the sun.

I almost always listen to classic rock and alternative. I have never understood modern pop/hip hop

Me too. Most of the music I listen to is alternative or classic rock. I'm just grumpy we don't have an alternative radio station in town (and I live in a college town); but there are two or three pop channels

Same with me, just change metal to alternative.

I completely agree with you about following band members when they move on to different projects. After my then favorite band Cross Canadian Ragweed called it quits, I followed the lead singer/lead guitarist and bass player on to their new band, The Departed. As much as I still like Ragweed, The Departed is a much better band.
